Disorder

<a graveyard shift? If you do, your health may be compromised. Over 15 million Americans work a job with late-night or early-morning hours, which leaves workers vulnerable to shift work disorder (SWD). SWD is hard to diagnose and treat, but the associated sleep deprivation and insomnia can be debilitating.

A recent study published in the Journal of American Physiology by researchers from the University of Toronto discovered another serious health risk posed by SWD -- a higher risk for organ disease. With the side effects of SWD only expanding, workers must find ways to manage the bodily stress.

Shift work disrupts the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, called circadian rhythm, which affects other critical factors like body temperature and the way organs function.

"We knew that circadian rhythm disruption had been linked with reduced longevity, so we decided to try and find out where, why and how longevity is compromised," explains psychology professor Martin Ralph from the University of Toronto, one of the lead researchers from the study on shift work.

Shift work is the opposite of 9-5, and demand for it is only increasing as customers expect more 24-hour services. Many occupations require permanent or occasional shift work, such as healthcare professionals, hospitality and restaurant staff, production and manufacturing workers, protective and emergency services and the transportation industry.

These workers suffer from the continual disturbance of their biological or circadian clocks. As the new study supports, long-term interference of this nature can lead to kidney or heart disease.

People suffering with SWD can also have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It is a condition marked by loud snoring, pauses in breathing and gasping. The repeated arousals contribute to the disruption of sleep. Like SWD, it can contribute to excessive daytime sleepiness, diabetes and heart disease. Unlike SWD, it is easy to diagnose and effectively treat.

Another tip is to create an ideal sleep environment -- eliminate extra noise and light to get the most out of your irregular sleep schedule. Try and stick to the same sleep and wake time, even on weekends. Don't hesitate to seek medical help.

To find more information and advice on sleep disorders, go to www.sleepapnea.org.

New Technology Developed To Help Keep Skin Moisturized

With so much attention being paid today about new technologies used in cell phones, video games and music downloading, it is surprising that there hasn't been enough written about the newest approach to maintaining proper skin hydration.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It protects you from bacteria and viruses that can cause infections. It also helps your body sense the outside world, such as whether it is hot or cold, wet or dry. And yes, your skin regulates your body temperature.

Just about everyone, at one time or another has skin that reacts to factors in the environment: germs, chemicals, harsh weather, animals, poor air quality, stress related irritations and sleep deprivation. Conditions that stress, clog or inflame your skin can cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, burning and itching. Allergies, irritants, genetic makeup, certain diseases and immune system disorders can cause dermatitis, hives and other skin conditions.

Proper care of the skin is a vital part of total body maintenance. As we grow older, our skin begins to dry out and lose elasticity. This dehydration process eventually causes skin to become so dry that it begins to crack and develop lines and age spots.

While there are literally thousands of different types of skin moisturizing products sold throughout the world today, almost all of them are based on an old technology known as "barrier" technology. The idea behind this technology was to cover the skin with a thin coating and protect it from the elements.

This was the standard approach to skin care products for the past few hundred years. While it was better than no treatment at all, many of these barrier products can clog the pores of the skin which results in stress and it can impair the natural skin breathing process. When you skin isn't breathing properly, it can become inflamed and worse. Also, any benefits these products were washed away as soon as the skin came in contact with water.

Fortunately about a dozen or so years ago, a team of dermatologists and scientists from around the world began to work together on a project to develop a skin moisturizing system to help the millions of people who work outdoors and as a result were prone to having very dry and unhealthy skin. This group working together and sharing their discoveries, led to the creation of a new generation of skin moisturizing products which when applied to the skin become completely absorbed into the skin and leave no greasy film.

The ingredients used in these products combine botanicals, vitamins and minerals, and they actually stimulate the body to moisturize itself naturally. A recent clinical trial conducted at a prestigious laboratory in the United States confirmed that the daily use of Columbia Healing Cream results in skin that appears to be younger looking, firmer and healthier looking after just three weeks.

For more information about Columbia Healing Cream you may search the web at www.fcsturtevant.com, or call toll free at 1-888-871-5661, or write to: The F.C. That's because most children grow out of their food allergies early in childhood. However, not all youngsters see their allergies go away, and many adults have allergic reactions to food throughout their lives.

Though it's possible for any food to trigger an allergy, most foods will not. Allergic reactions to food are, more often than not, triggered by the following foods.

1. Peanuts: While some kids outgrow a peanut allergy, it's often lifelong. One of the most common causes of food allergy, peanuts can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction. Such severe side effects is one reason medical professionals often recommend people with peanut allergies avoid even the tiniest amounts of peanuts. Even a trace of peanuts can cause severe reactions, so it's sometimes best to avoid tree nuts as well. These include almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, and cashew nuts. Crude peanut oil might also contain peanut allergens, and many people with peanut allergies avoid such oil as a result.

2. Eggs: Many children with an egg allergy outgrow it by the time they become toddlers. However, some have such a severe egg allergy they cannot even be around when someone is cooking eggs. Cooking the eggs can destroy the allergens most people react to, but cooking won't necessarily kill all of them. People with an egg allergy should check labels when visiting the grocery store, as products like ice cream, hot dogs, mayonnaise, and some pastas are hidden sources of eggs and can trigger an allergy.

3. Milk: A milk allergy is another type that children often outgrow by the time they reach toddlerhood. However, not all kids outgrow a milk allergy, which can manifest itself as rashes, diarrhea, vomiting or stomach cramps. When a person has a milk allergy, it's caused by a reaction to certain allergens in cows' milk, including whey and casein. Even small amounts of casein and whey can trigger an allergy, and the allergens in cow's milk are very similar to those in goat's and sheep's milk as well, meaning it's possible that a person with a cow's milk allergy will also be allergic to goat's and sheep's milk.

4. Fish: Adults are more likely to have an allergic reaction to fish and shellfish than children. Those with a specific fish allergy should be wary of cross-contamination, and many are advised that it's best to avoid seafood entirely. What's more, because the allergens in fish are so similar, people who are allergic to a specific type of fish will often find that other types of fish trigger a reaction as well. When shopping, be careful of certain Caesar salad dressings, as some contain anchovy paste, and read the labels before buying any fish sauce or even Worcestershire sauce.

5. Wheat: Wheat allergy is one of the more common food allergies. One of wheat's most prominent allergens is gliadin, a protein found in gluten. As a result, many people with a wheat allergy follow a gluten-free diet, which means they must avoid many processed snacks, deli meats, some ice creams, and even beer.
When it comes to food allergies, some of the more enjoyable foods are common triggers. To avoid many of the more harmful side effects of food allergies, always read product labels before cooking or consuming foods.

Are You at Risk for Gum Disease and Its Many Health Threats? Most patients are unaware of both the consequences and the treatment options

Eighty percent of U.S. adults suffer from some degree of gum disease, yet only 60 percent are aware of it1. And only 3 percent choose to treat it2. That's alarming, because gum disease, or periodontitis, threatens much more than oral health; studies have linked gum disease to heart disease, strokes and even stillbirths.

With such broad health consequences, how do you know you are at risk?

A Mouthful of Risk

Not surprising, risk factors begin in the mouth--with poor oral hygiene and diet. Bacteria and plaque build up without proper brushing and flossing. Teeth with cracks and crevices or improperly sealed fillings and crowns can trap food and encourage plaque and bacteria growth.

Patients with impacted wisdom teeth are also at risk and often experience no symptoms. For this reason, dental professionals recommend that preteens, teens and young adults have their dentists examine them for signs of gum disease.

Risks Increase With Age

The older people get, the greater their risk for gum disease. More than half of American adults 35-69 show signs of gingivitis surrounding three or four teeth; about 30 percent show significant levels of gum disease3. Eighty-six percent of people older than 70 show moderate gum disease and more than 25 percent lose their teeth4.

Factors That Run in the Family

Genetics may be responsible for about half of periodontal disease cases. Those whose parents suffered gum disease are 12 times more likely to harbor the bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease5.

Even spouses and partners may be at risk, say researchers who've found that a particular oral bacteria may be contagious over long periods of exposure.

The Smoking Gun

Of all the risks for periodontal disease, smoking is the most preventable. Smokers are four times more likely to develop advanced periodontal disease and exhibit bone loss and gum recession even without gum disease. More than 40 percent of smokers lose their teeth during their lifetimes6.

Even secondhand smoke carries risks, with a 50 percent to 60 percent higher incidence of gum disease7. When people quit smoking, however, risks return to normal over time.

Women and Gum Disease

Despite their better dental hygiene, women account for about 75 percent of periodontal office visits8. Studies point to the effects of female hormones on oral health -- effects that are also triggered by prescription birth control and menopause. Some women see gingivitis flare-ups a few days before their periods and during ovulation as the hormone progesterone dilates blood vessels, causing inflammation and slowing down the repair of collagen -- the protein that supports gums.

These same hormonal fluctuations are in force throughout pregnancy, typically worsening at two months and peaking around the eighth month of pregnancy. These hormonal changes don't actually cause gum disease; they simply make women more vulnerable to it. Stepping up oral hygiene can make a big difference -- especially important given the recent research that links gum disease with low birth weight and other complications including stillbirth9. These risks make dental visits a vital part of prenatal health care.

Socioeconomic Status and Ethnicity

As with many diseases, gum disease appears in greater numbers among the poor, particularly poor children and elderly people as well as racial minorities. Those with fewer financial resources for dental visits show the greatest amounts of oral bacteria. Approximately 44 million Americans live without medical insurance; 110 million have no dental insurance10.

Diseases Associated with Periodontal Disease

Many diseases also contribute to the development of periodontal disease, whether as a direct result of the disease or as a side effect of medication. Some of the most common are diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, herpes, HIV and autoimmune disorders.

Additional Causes of Gum Inflammation

A variety of additional conditions also cause gum inflammation and are associated with higher rates of gum disease, including:

* Mouth breathing

* Stress. Its effects on the immune system are well documented. Some studies show that those effects include development of periodontal disease.

* Alcohol abuse

* Canker sores

* Allergies

* Side effects of prescription medications

Successful Treatment is Key

Ninety-two percent of pregnant women who were successfully treated for gum disease delivered full-term babies; whereas 62 percent with unsuccessful treatment delivered pre-term and 52 percent of women who were not given any treatment delivered pre-term. These findings were published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Marjorie Jeffcoat, Professor of Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania11.

Prevention of systemic diseases might be achieved with the successful treatment of gum disease.

Success is determined by the treatments' ability to reduce or eliminate gum inflammation, slow or stop attachment loss and decrease pocket depth - and that can vary depending on the type of treatment. The LANAP(R) treatment is one of the most successful protocols in treating gum disease because it can target the source of the inflammation without hurting or removing any healthy gums, allowing the body to recover from the chronic infection.

A Treatment Alternative

Regardless of its causes, moderate to severe periodontal disease is treatable. Traditional surgery has long been the only option - a painful process where gums are cut open, biofilm on teeth is scraped away, then the gums are sewn together and recovery begins.

An FDA-cleared laser treatment called the LANAP(R) protocol offers a less painful, more successful treatment. The doctor does not cut open the gums -- leading to less pain and a shorter recovery. The PerioLase(R) MVP-7(TM) is the only laser approved for this treatment. The PerioLase MVP-7 uses a specific wavelength to target and destroy dark colored p. gingivalis bacteria - a main contributor to gum disease.

Ask your dentist if you are at risk for gum disease and what treatment is right for you.

For more information, visit www.LANAP.com.

About the Author: Robert H. However, even people with good oral care habits may hear from their dentist or hygienist that they have signs of gingivitis, an early form of gum disease.

Arming yourself with a better understanding of gingivitis and tools to help fight it can help improve the health of your mouth and make your next dental visit a more positive experience.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a very common early form of gum disease that causes gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily during brushing or flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis, which affects the tissues that surround and support the teeth and represents a major cause of tooth loss in adults.1

How Can I Fight Gingivitis?

Fortunately, there are several ways you can protect yourself from gingivitis. Try these techniques between dental visits to help improve your chances of acing your next dental check-up.

* Rinse, rinse, rinse! Using a mouth rinse is an important part of your overall oral care routine. Look for a rinse that protects against plaque and gingivitis like Crest(R) Pro-Health(R) Invigorating Clean Multi-Protection Rinse. Rinsing with Invigorating Clean takes no more than a minute a day, but protects against gingivitis and leaves you with a lasting cool freshness that helps to signal that you are on the path to a healthy mouth. In fact, in a survey of over 100 Women's Health readers selected to receive free samples of a new Crest Pro-Health Rinse, 89 percent felt more confident about their next dental check-up after regular use of Crest Pro-Health Invigorating Clean Multi-Protection Rinse.2

* Give your mouth the time it deserves. Spending a little more time on your oral health is an easy way to help keep your smile in shape. Make sure to spend at least two minutes brushing, which should include 30 seconds of brushing each section of your mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left), both morning and night.

* Get in touch with your toothpaste. Not all toothpastes work the same, so choose one that protects against gingivitis. Unlike ordinary toothpastes, Crest(R) Pro-Health(R) Clinical Gum Protection Invigorating Clean Mint Toothpaste helps eliminate plaque at the gum line. In a recent clinical study, 100 percent of people who used Clinical Gum Protection Invigorating Clean Mint Toothpaste together with Crest Pro-Health Invigorating Clean Multi-Protection Rinse, Oral-B(R) CrossAction(R) Pro-Health(R) Toothbrush and Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Clinical Protection Floss had reduced gingivitis in just two weeks.3

Taking steps towards helping to prevent gingivitis can not only help you achieve a healthier mouth, but can help make you and your dentist smile at your next visit!

To learn more about your dental health, visit www.crestprohealth.com.

1. Those with straight hair will curl and perm to achieve wavy locks, while individuals with a mane of curls often desire sleekness not easily achieved without blow-drying and processing. Women who have been undergoing popular treatments to enjoy straight, sleek hair may be realizing some serious, unwanted side effects as a result.

For some time now, women have been flocking to area salons to undergo straightening treatments that promise long-lasting results in minimal time. One of the more popular names is the Brazilian Blowout(R), a professional smoothing solution, purported to have been developed by style specialists in Brazil. Treatments like the blowout made headlines for a time thanks to the dramatic results they provided for women with curly, kinky or overly frizzy hair. In about 90 minutes, a customer can walk out of a salon with pristine straight hair that lasts up to 3 months. However, recent news regarding these products has been less than stellar. Certain

individuals began experiencing negative health effects, possibly attributable to the salon processes.

The controversy surrounds the formaldehyde that is contained in the product. While reformulations now tout that these straightening treatments are formaldehyde-free, experts say that they really do contain formaldehyde, just small, safe levels. But what constitutes safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that .2 percent of formaldehyde is allowed in toiletry and cosmetic products as a preservative. The Oregon Occupational Safety & Health Administration has tested Brazilian Blowout(R) and other similar products, like Keratin Complex(R) by U.S. brand Coppola, and has found that some contain up to 10 percent of formaldehyde, despite saying they're free of the chemical.

How the hair-straightening properties of formaldehyde were discovered is relatively unknown. Some suggest it is from the way wool is straightened with formaldehyde in the textile industry. Until then, formaldehyde was largely known as a preservative, such as in embalming fluid. Formaldehyde and other derivatives, such as aldehyde, glutaraldehyde, formalin or methylene glycol can be skin, respiratory and eye irritants. When these chemicals are heated --as is part of the process in popular blowout treatments -- toxic fumes are often the byproduct.

Stylists have reported getting headaches, having watery eyes, trouble breathing, or feeling nauseous after applying treatments. Clients have experienced everything from burning to itchy skin to hair loss as a result.

Litigation against popular blowout products is ongoing in certain locales. In turn, the manufacturers of these treatments are also suing for misrepresentation. While there are limited self-imposed bans of some of these products, blowouts are still widely available at salons. It is up to the client and the stylist to decide whether they want to run the risks of the treatment.

For those who are looking for straight hair other ways, flat irons and regular blow-drying are less expensive ways to achieve the results. However, these more traditional treatments only last until the hair is washed or a humid day arises.

Simple ways to ease the 'ouch'

Sunblock -- and its adequate reapplication -- is one of the single most effective ways to prevent sunburn and a host of sun-related maladies. Despite the warnings of skin cancer and ailments related to the sun, people succumb to sunburn year after year. The results can be quite painful.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, getting sunburned even once can make a person more likely to get skin cancer. Though it can be that simple to increase risk for skin cancer, there's actually quite a lot going on behind the scenes when a person gets a sunburn. The very outer layer of the epidermis, or the outside-most skin, is made up of dead skin cells. Directly below them are living skin cells that can be damaged when ultraviolet light from the sun penetrates these living cells and eventually kills them off. Once the body senses the dead cells, the immune system springs into action. White blood cells are sent to the area to repair damage, which involves increased blood flow. This blood flow makes the skin red and warm. Furthermore, the damaged skin cells send out chemical messengers that activate pain receptors. This is why sunburned skin is red, warm and painful.

There are different remedies for alleviating the pain associated with sunburn. While there are some over-the-counter analgesics that will temporarily numb pain, some of the best treatments are simple and natural.

* Cool water baths and brief showers can reduce the temperature of the skin.

* Aloe gels often soothe and cool. It is believed that aloe has anti-inflammatory properties.

* Some people say that white vinegar can reduce pain and inflammation when sprayed on the affected area or used in compresses.

* Sunburned skin is often dry and chapped. A moisturizer, such as cocoa butter, can help minimize irritation.

* It's important to remain hydrated because damaged skin may not be as effective in locking moisture inside. Plus, the body needs food and water to fuel the repair of sunburned skin.

The best remedy for sunburn is to avoid it at all costs. Wearing sunblock, a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protection clothing, and sunglasses and avoiding the sun during peak hours are ways to remain comfortable and healthy.

Battle the Burn How to Prevent Razor Burn

Most men have had at least one uncomfortable encounter with razor burn. Razor burn occurs after shaving and can be uncomfortable and lead to razor bumps. The bumps can be red and are typically accompanied by ingrown hairs.

Razor burn is easy to prevent. Because it's often a byproduct of a poor shaving routine, razor burn does not have to be an accepted part of a daily shave. The following tips can help men ensure their next shave is smooth and pain-free.

* Prepare the skin. The skin must be prepared before you begin shaving. It's not a good idea for men to roll right out of bed and put a razor to their faces. For the best shave, bathe and exfoliate before shaving. Chemical exfoliants that contain salicylic acid help remove dirt, oil and dead skin, making it easier for the razor to glide smoothly.

Once the skin has been bathed and exfoliated, cover any area that will be shaved with lotion or conditioner, but don't rub anything into the skin. Once applied, lotion and conditioner should be allowed to sit for a few minutes. This softens the hair, making it easier to shave the hair off. Be sure not to let lotion or conditioner sit for more than a few minutes, as the skin might start to absorb the moisture, causing the skin to puff up and making it difficult to get a close, smooth shave.

* Consider saying "so long" to shaving cream. Shaving cream is a staple in most men's medicine cabinet, but men who feel they are especially susceptible to razor burn might want to use shaving soap instead. Old-fashioned barber shops that still offer straight shaves use shaving soap, which is often better at lubricating the skin than standard shaving creams.

* Re-examine your technique. Many men might get razor burn because they're simply not shaving correctly or their tools aren't up to the task.

Before shaving again, make sure your razor is sharp and the blade is clean. Many men overextend the life of their razors, which makes it difficult to get a smooth shave. A dull razor will almost certainly lead to razor burn, as men will likely need to go over the same patch of skin more than once to remove hair.

Once you have secured a sharp and clean blade, re-examine your shaving technique. When shaving, shave slowly in small strokes, cleaning the blade by tapping it against the sink and rinsing it with hot water between each stroke. Pull loose skin tight, but avoid stretching the skin. Each stroke should be shaved with the grain, which will enable a closer, smoother shave. When shaving the same area more than once, re-apply lubricant before each time.

* Finish the job. The job of shaving isn't done once all the hair has been removed. To prevent razor burn, splash cold water over the skin after shaving to close the skin's pores. Cold water or an ice cube are just as effective as alcohol-based after shaves at cooling the skin, and cold water or ice cubes won't dry out the skin.

Once cold water has been applied or an ice cube has been run over the shaved skin, apply an aloe vera balm. Such a balm speeds up the skin's recovery and will moisturize the shaved skin and cool it as well.

For men battling razor burn, it's important to allow the skin to heal completely before shaving again. Also, if the skin has succumbed to razor burn, avoid any products that contain alcohol, as these will only irritate the skin further. In addition, avoid scratching or rubbing irritated areas, and never apply cologne to razor-burned skin.

Benefits to Hair Coloring

Hair coloring is a way of life for many people. Although some decide on a change of color for creative reasons, many individuals go under the bottle to cover up gray hair. But hair dye may offer other benefits than covering up signs of aging.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that 2 out of 5 women in America dye their hair, while roughly 11 percent of men dye their hair. Young people are just as likely to dye their hair as older ones, according to research by Miss Clairol. Therefore, there have to be other benefits to changing one's hue beyond gray coverage -- and there are. Here's a look at a few.

* Added body:People with limp locks may want to give color a try. That's because coloring plumps the hair shaft and can make hair temporarily thicker and with more body than before.

* Shine and dimension:Putting a subtle color on the hair can create varied hues that pick up and reflect light differently. This can make the hair seem more vibrant and interesting.

* More "pop": Just because a person was born with a specific hair color doesn't mean it is the best complement to his or her skin tone or eye color. Changing one's hair shade can make other attributes stand out more. Eyes may seem more radiant and skin less washed out. Experimenting with different shades can help a person find the best version of him or herself.

* Natural options:Today there are hair dyes in many different formulations. There are also all-natural colors that deposit color into the hair, rather than stripping the cuticle to then add back color with chemicals. No matter the formula a person wants to try, a salon or over-the-counter product may be able to offer it.

* Solution for thinning hair: Many men and women eventually lose some of their hair or experience thinning patches. Hair dye can plump hair and create the illusion of more hair. This is a less expensive method to try than hair replacement surgeries or other treatments.

For those who are interested in phasing out hair dye, especially if they want gray hair to grow in, they can work with a colorist to place strategic low-lights in the hair. This will camouflage the gray hair and enable the gray to grow in less abruptly.

Spring Not Fun for Allergy Sufferers

Many embrace the spring thanks to its warm weather and budding flowers and trees. Those with seasonal allergies, however, may not look so favorably on the new season.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, about 50 million Americans experience spring allergies. Some may have allergies each and every year. Others may find their allergies are newly discovered. The most common allergy triggers in spring include trees, grasses and weeds.

Allergies can evoke a number of symptoms:

* itchy eyes

* sneezing

* congestion

* headaches

* coughing

* runny nose

* sore throat

* shortness of breath

* hives

Several of the symptoms of allergies mimic those of the common cold, and allergies are often mistaken for late winter colds. But as time spent outdoors with flowering plants triggers symptoms or inhalation of dust from spring cleaning induces an attack, the allergy culprit may become more apparent.

Pollen is one of the main contributors to allergies in the spring. For many people, pollen is seen as an outside invader to the body and its immune system. When pollen is inhaled or comes in contact with the eyes, the immune system triggers a response to get rid of the foreign substance. Excess mucous buildup and tears may be generated to wash out the pollen. What all of this fluid can mean is sinus pressure, runny nose, watery eyes, and eventually cough or congestion from fluids running down the breathing passages and into the lungs.

As the body prepares to fend off pollen invaders, other symptoms may occur. Fatigue, aches and pains and other flu-like symptoms may be present. While battling pollen, the immune system is in full swing and may not be able to fully devote attention to other invaders, like bacteria and viruses. A person with allergies might be more susceptible to sickness.

There really are no cures for common allergies, only methods to manage the symptoms. Individuals with strong allergies to pollen should avoid spending a lot of time outside when pollen counts are especially high or the wind is blowing pollen around. Pollen predictions can be obtained through the local weather report or doing a little investigating online. Here are some other steps to limit troublesome springtime allergies.

* Take a shower to wash off pollen from hair and skin after coming indoors.

* Launder clothes regularly.

* Keep windows and doors closed on high pollen days.

* Use a HEPA air filter inside of the home.

* Do not air-dry clothes, linens or other items outdoors on a clothesline.

* Consider using a saline irrigation spray to improve breathing and cleanse the nasal passages of pollen.

* Talk with a doctor about the best OTC products available for allergy symptoms. If those are ineffective, prescription medications may work.

* Some people find relief from alternative health treatments, such as acupuncture or ear candling.
Being proactive about seasonal allergies can mean getting relief earlier or even preventing serious complications in the spring.

The Hype About Heart-Healthy Red Wine

Red wine has recently been touted as a cure-all for heart ailments and its popularity has risen as a result. But there remains differing opinions as to the health benefits of red wine.

Red wine is made from fermented red and dark grapes where the skin is left on during the fermenting process. It is this skin that gives the wine its characteristic dark hue. White wine is produced in a similar fashion, although the grape skins are removed before fermentation.

Experts believe that substances in the grapes -- especially in the skins -- contribute to its heart-healthy nature. However, no one is really sure exactly what it is about wine that can make it advantageous to people looking to improve heart health.

Studies supporting red wine's medical benefits suggest antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols help protect the lining of blood vessels in the heart. Polyphenols come in flavonoids and nonflavonoids. Flavonoids are brightly colored plant pigments that occur naturally in most fresh fruits and vegetables. Nonflavonoids are largely vitamins, minerals and other plant pigments. Resveratrol is a nonflavonoid that gets the bulk of the credit when speaking of red wine's medical benefits. Resveratrol is purported to help prevent damage to blood vessels while reducing "bad" cholesterol and may prevent blood clots.

It is important to note that much of the research on resveratrol and red wine has been conducted on mice and other animals, not people. For humans to acquire the amount of resveratrol given to lab animals to equate to the same health benefits, a person would have to consume 100 to 1,000 bottles of red wine a day.

Alcohol, in general, may be heart-healthy because it thins the blood and improves circulation. This can be advantageous to individuals who already are facing blockages in arteries and need improved blood flow. But grapes alone may also relax blood vessels allowing blood to flow more easily.

Red wine also contains vitamin C and other healthy substances, which can improve overall health.

Although there are reasons to believe red wine can be a heart-healthy addition to one's diet, doctors may be reticent to suggest it because alcohol use can present other problems, especially if it is abused. With this in mind, red or purple grape juice and whole grapes can be a viable alternative for those looking to get the benefits of resveratrol and other antioxidants without the down side of alcohol.

Grape juice provides much of the same benefits of red wine. Eating whole red or purple grapes does too, in addition to the benefit of fiber in one's diet.

For those who want to go the red wine route, remember that alcohol should be consumed in moderation. That means one drink a day for women or up to two drinks a day for men.

Cholesterol Content of Some Favorite Foods

Individuals are often told to monitor their cholesterol consumption. Exercise is important at any age, but can be particularly beneficial for individuals in their golden years. The key is finding exercises that are both safe and effective.

Benefits of Exercise

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 28 to 44 percent of seniors ages 65 to 75 are inactive, meaning they don't get enough daily exercise for optimal health. Studies indicate that there are many reasons that seniors should engage in regular exercise.

* It can help stave off illness and chronic conditions by keeping the immune system healthy.

* It paves the way for better sleep, including falling asleep easier and sleeping more deeply.

* Exercise releases natural endorphins, which help a person feel good about him or herself and can boost mood.

* Regular exercise can promote weight loss, especially when done in conjunction with a healthy diet.

* Improved muscle tone can take pressure off of joints and help with mobility.

* Research indicates that exercise can boost brain function and keep dementia at bay.

* When participating in social exercise, seniors realize companionship and stress relief.

* Exercise can keep systems of the body in check, reducing constipation and helping circulatory issues.

Engaging In the Right Exercises

While it may have been the norm to do multiple, rigorous repetitions of exercises during one's youth, older adults should employ different strategies. Certain exercises are better than others and can help reduce the risk of injury.

Before starting any type of exercise regimen, seniors should talk with a physician about the pros and cons of certain activities. The doctor may be able to provide guidance as to which activities are better for specific conditions a person has. For example, an individual with arthritis may want to seek low-impact workouts, such as water aerobics.

Once a doctor gives the go-ahead, here are some exercises many 50+ people can try.

* Walking: Walking remains one of the best exercises for people of any age. The pace and resistance can be set by each individual by walking faster or slower, uphill or downhill. Adding light weights can make the workout even more effective. Walking is also easier on the legs and knees than jogging, but can be just as effective a cardiovascular workout.

* Leg extensions: Repetitions of leg extensions stretch the muscles of the legs and flex the knee joint. This can promote longevity of the knees and keep knee replacements at bay.

* Swimming: Enrolling in a local gym or YMCA that has a pool can be a boon to seniors. Swimming is a low-impact workout that targets most areas of the body as well as providing a cardiovascular workout. Plus, since swimming can be relaxing and enjoyable, it's an exercise that many people don't mind doing.

* Strength training: Moderate weight lifting can keep muscles strong and promote a healthy metabolism, considering muscle burns more calories than fat.

* Endurance exercise: Just about any activity that gets the heart rate up for an extended period of time is good for the body. This can be raking leaves, mowing the lawn, walking, bicycling, playing a game of catch, etc. Be sure the doctor cleans any such activities beforehand.

The flu vaccine -- Protection from the flu. Whereas discussing proper hygiene together with your tween could be tough, it is possible to deal with the subject with out making him or her feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. One approach mother and father can take is to attraction to your tweens' rising maturity by making it clear that these self-care tasks are their responsibility. Giving your tween the respect and encouragement to make their very own selections in these transitional years may help them develop wholesome habits for life.

To help empower your tween to take better care of their hygiene, parents can follow the following pointers:

Make it Fun: The tween years are all about finding a singular sense of style. This additionally applies to cosmetics and accessories. Enable your tween to choose their shampoos, soaps and oral care products. This may encourage them to take curiosity in their hygiene without you having to ask.

Brace Face: Tooth brushing is usually a struggle at this age. Your little one could go in the lavatory for 30 seconds and declare that she or he has brushed. Kids should know that good oral care is simply as necessary as taking a shower, particularly in case your little one has braces. Make the process a bit simpler and ensure they're brushing for the correct amount of time by keeping a two minute timer within the bathroom. By supplying your tween with merchandise in the flavors (e.g. not-too-spicy, not-too-sweet) and funky designs they'll like, such as the Crest Pro-Health FOR ME Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste, they might even forget they are doing something wholesome and those two minutes will fly!

"Oral health is an important subject notably for youths of their adolescent years. Tooth decay is still acknowledged as the commonest continual disease affecting kids within the United States. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 51 million hours of school are misplaced annually as a result of dental-related illness1," says Dr. Jennifer Salzer, orthodontist, dentist and mom of a tween. "Not solely can poor oral hygiene affect the well being and properly-being of a child, it additionally performs a task in self-esteem."

Underneath Armor: Puberty is the first time adolescents should take care of body odor. Assist your tween perceive methods to management odors by explaining the distinction between deodorant, which controls micro organism whereas adding fragrance, and antiperspirant, which stops or limits sweating. Remind your tween that both deodorant and antiperspirant will assist in the event that they put it on before they start sweating, not after.

Skincare one zero one: Changing hormones sometimes result in oilier skin, particularly on the nose and forehead. Educate your tween to clean their face a couple of times a day with a cleanser and discourage them from picking, as this causes inflammation and scarring.

Lead by Example: Whether they admit it or not, your tween notices your habits. Set an example by showing that a wholesome hygiene routine is important to you too.

Wash Away These Common Skincare Myths

(MS) -- The skin is your body's largest organ, so it's no wonder there is such an abundance of products and advice available to help keep it in top form. While many products and practices are touted as being "the best" for your skin, the truth is, when it comes to skincare there are often more myths than facts. The wise consumer should know how to separate fact from fiction. The skincare experts who make CeraVe(R) cleansers and moisturizers want to help everyone put their best face forward -- and that means learning the truth about healthy skincare.

MYTH: Skin is protected from the sun when you use a product with a high sun protection factor (SPF).

FACT: Some SPF products only block against one type of UV ray, generally UVB, or the rays that cause sunburns. In reality, the sun showers us with UVA, UVB and UVC rays. UVA rays, which have an aging effect, penetrate into the lower layers of the skin and should be protected against as well. That means you should look for a sunscreen that is clearly labeled "broad spectrum," not just ones with a high SPF number.

MYTH: Deep scrubbing of your complexion prevents breakouts.

FACT: Cleansing with harsh soaps or exfoliating scrubs can strip the skin of vital natural oils and compromise its protective barrier. Harsh and frequent, more than twice a day, cleansing can trick the skin into producing more oil and compound breakout problems. Scrubbing can also lead to skin sensitivity or rashes.

MYTH: Facials are a beauty must-have.

FACT: Facials can be fun and if done by an expert esthetician can help deliver a variety of benefits such as moisturization, deep cleansing and exfoliation. If you can afford a professional facial make sure you're "in the hands" of an expert esthetician or you could wind up with irritation or scarring.

MYTH: Wrinkle creams can completely eradicate wrinkles.

FACT: These days there are many ways to "erase" the signs of time on the skin. The most effective ways are with injectable substances, fillers or plastic surgery. Professionally administered chemical peels and lasers can also help give your skin a fresher, more youthful appearance. Anti-aging creams cannot "completely remove wrinkles," but their formulas often contain ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and ceramides that deeply moisturize the skin and make it look more supple and radiant.

MYTH: Doing facial exercises will tone facial muscles, providing a more youthful appearance.

FACT: There has never been any substantiation for this beauty myth. In fact, certain facial movements such as squinting and laughing may contribute to the formation of wrinkles -- maybe that's why we call them laugh lines and crows feet.

MYTH: Expensive skincare products are better for your skin.

FACT: Many mass-marketed products available at your local drugstore are just as effective as luxury department-store brands. In fact, many contain the same ingredients as their more expensive counterparts. Elegant packaging, advertising and luxury brand names are often what you pay for when purchasing more expensive products. CeraVe(R) cleansers and moisturizers, which contain ceramides, hyaluronic acid, cholesterol and niacinamide, found in pricier brands, also feature a patented technology that allows a single application to go a long way. The ingredients unravel slowly in the skin where they continue to work for up to 24 hours. CeraVe(R) Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM, applied before bedtime, penetrates the skin barrier to lock in precious moisture. CeraVe(R) Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM with SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum protection against harmful UV rays year round. It's 24/7 skincare.

To learn more about these innovative and affordable products (both under $15), visit www.cerave.com.

11 Ways to Reduce Cancer Risk

Each year, millions of new cases of cancer are diagnosed across the globe. Although there is no definitive cause for many of the cancers out there, certain lifestyle choices put a person at a greater risk for cancer. By making a few simple changes, that risk can be reduced.

1. Eat steamed broccoli. Broccoli is one of the superfoods purported to help reduce cancer risk. However, microwaving or overcooking broccoli can destroy up to 97 percent of broccoli's cancer-preventing flavanoids. Therefore, eat broccoli raw or lightly steam it to retain the most nutrients.

2. Load up on garlic. Garlic might contribute to bad breath, but the side effect may be worth it. Garlic contains sulfur that can help fend off cancer by stimulating the body's natural immune system.

3. Enjoy orange foods. Sweet potatoes, carrots and cantaloupe contain carotinoids, which can reduce risk of cancer.

4. Eat some blueberries. Blueberries top the list for antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which can contribute to cancer.

5. Drink plenty of water. The body needs water to stay healthy and flush out contaminants. Therefore, enjoy eight glasses per day.

6. Get a little sunlight. Not only does sunlight boost mood, which can reduce stress and keep the body in top form, the body receives most of its vitamin D from the sun. Minimal sun exposure will increase vitamin D in the body. Too little vitamin D can actually contribute to some cancers.

7. Reduce animal fat intake. Cut down on the amount of high-fat dairy and meat products consumed.

8. Walk 30 minutes a day. Even moderate exercise can reduce cancer risk.

9. Reduce exposure to chemicals. Let those dandelions sprout in the lawn, skip dry cleaning clothes and use natural items around the house for cleaning. This reduces a person's exposure to potentially toxic chemicals that may contribute to cancer.

10. Enjoy grapes. Grapes contain the cancer-fighting compound resveratrol, which is found in wine. However, grapes do not offer the potentially negative consequences of alcohol consumption.

11. Choose organic whenever possible. Organic foods are grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers, making them better for the body.

CAPTION: Eating foods like broccoli can help reduce cancer risk.

Has Your Skin Hit a Rough Spot? This unusually harsh winter may have left your skin feeling exceptionally dry, cracked and flaky -- and in urgent need of help, now that spring is here.

Low humidity, icy winds and frigid temperatures may have damaged your skin's natural protective outer layer, the skin barrier. You might be seeing signs of this all over your body in the form of rough, red, cracked patches of skin. In fact, your entire body might be feeling dry and flaky. What can you do?

While a trip to a dermatologist would be ideal, you can do the next best thing by instituting a regimen widely recommended by them. First, remember to use only cool to tepid water when washing. Then begin restoring your skin's barrier with a trip to your local mass retailer or drugstore. There you can find products to help replenish the natural ingredients in your skin that keep it hydrated.

The CeraVe(R) line of cleansers and moisturizers, often recommended by dermatologists, is an ideal way to help restore your skin to a softer, smoother state. The line was developed with a special ceramide and hyaluronic acid formula; all the ingredients naturally found in healthy skin. Start from the face down. Before bedtime wash your face with CeraVe(R) Hydrating Cleanser to loosen daily dirt, grime and even makeup. It adds precious vital lipids back into your skin, instead of stripping them away as many cleansers do. If you're experiencing dry, itchy skin on your body, substitute the cleanser for your bath or shower soap and literally cleanse your skin from head to toe. Next, treat your face to CeraVe(R) Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM. It helps to repair damaged skin and maintain its natural protective function with ingredients not commonly found in other moisturizers. CeraVe(R) Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM also includes Niacinamide, which has been clinically proven tohelp the skin produce more ceramides and fatty acids essential for barrier repair.

Use CeraVe(R) Moisturizing Lotion on the rest of your body. The suds that build up while washing hair are largely the work of SLES. But rumors abound that SLES can make people sick and possibly even cause cancer. Are the rumors true?

SLES is a detergent, a crystalline salt of sulfated lauryl alcohol. It is a surfactant, or a substance that breaks down the surface tension between different compounds. It's what helps the shampoo dissolve the dirt and oil from your hair. Without it, shampoo would not work as effectively.

Because it is such a good detergent, SLES is found in many cleaning products other than shampoo. It is also found in stronger cleaners, such as garage floor stain removers. That's led some to question whether something so powerful can be safely applied to the skin and scalp without ramifications?

In the past, rumors floated about a possible link between SLES and cancer. However, shampoos and other cosmetic products are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which carefully considers each product's safety. The FDA and even the American Cancer Society agree that SLES does not cause cancer, especially in the amounts used in shampoo. Some have surmised that the cancer rumor surfaced from some natural-foods marketing executives who wanted to boost sales of SLES-free products.

What is the worst that SLEScan do to the body? It may cause topical irritation, say experts. In such cases, however, the skin would have to be exposed to the SLES for a long duration of time before being washed off. SLES is also found in toothpastes. While it's best not to swallow too much toothpaste due to fluoride poisoning and the presence of SLES, an estimated 16 pounds would have to be swallowed for SLES toxicity to occur.

Despite proof of relatively safety, there are still many people who would prefer to use SLES-free products to wash their body and hair. Many companies now market shampoos that do not contain SLES or sodium lauryl sulfate. Major retailers like Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Target now carry SLES-free shampoos and soaps at reasonable prices. Some people have reported a different feel to hair when washed with an alternative product for washing.

Clean Hands Save Lives

Washing hands isn't simply a method of cleaning up before sitting down to dinner. Frequent hand-washing is the single most effective way to prevent illness.

Proper hand-washing has proven effective against the spread of 99 percent of germs that travel via droplets -- and that includes the flu virus. The fact of the matter is that dirty hands have the potential to be deadly, especially if they are the carriers of hazardous germs.

It's impossible to avoid germs. Simply going about daily activities exposes a person to thousands of germs. Shopping in a store, going to school or even spending time around the house can spread germs. When a person touches his or her eyes, mouth or nose with hands that are harboring viruses or bacteria, illnesses can easily take root. Germs can also be spread via touch.

There are many times when hands should be washed.

Before ...

* preparing food

* eating food

* inserting or removing contact lenses

* treating someone who is sick or injured

* giving or taking medicine

After ...

* changing a diaper

* touching an animal, pet toys, etc.

* using the bathroom

* using public transportation

* preparing food, especially raw meats and poultry

* handling garbage or soiled items

* touching a sick or injured person

* blowing your nose or sneezing

Proper Hand-Washing Techniques

There is a right way to wash hands. Follow this procedure, courtesy of The Mayo Clinic.

1. Turn on the water to desired temperature (cold or hot water is equally effective).

2. Wet hands under running water.

3. Apply soap and lather for 20 seconds or more, paying careful attention to all areas of the hands, including the backs of the hands.

4. Rinse well.

5. Dry hands on a towel or with an air dryer. Use a towel to close the faucet. Many germs live on wet faucet handles, and a person can contaminate him or herself again.

Keep in mind that antibacterial soap is no more effective at killing germs than regular soap. In fact, antibacterial products -- when overused -- actually may kill off good bacteria or cause certain bacteria to become resistant. This will make it harder to kill these germs in the future.

When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based sanitizers are effective at keeping hands clean. Look for commercially produced products that contain at least 60 percent alcohol. Enough of the product should be used to wet hands completely. Rub hands and wait for the product to be completely dry for maximum effectiveness.

CAPTION: Washing hands correctly can remove 99 percent of germs that contribute to common illnesses.

Wrinkle Reduction Made Easy

Apart from graying hair, wrinkles are one of the key signs of aging in a person. As a result, individuals will often search near and far and spare no expense at keeping wrinkles at bay. However, there are simple steps one can take to diminish the look of wrinkles without drastic measures.

Injectable fillers and other medical procedures top the list of wrinkle treatments. However, for those who don't want to visit a doctor for wrinkles, there are some steps to try.

First, treating wrinkles requires understanding why they form. As a person ages, his or her skin becomes thinner, dryer and less elastic. These factors contribute to the creases that form in the skin. Genetics also plays a large role in the probability for wrinkles. Some people are just prone to more wrinkles than others.

Certain controllable factors also contribute to wrinkles. Therefore, elimination of these factors can lessen the chance for wrinkle formation.

* Quit smoking. Blood supply changes in the skin as a result of smoking, which can speed up the natural aging process. Smokers tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers. Simply quitting can help stave off wrinkling of the skin.

* Avoid UV exposure. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can damage the skin. This can dry out skin, removing elasticity and even thinning out the skin years before nature would. UV exposure breaks down the skin's connective tissue, contributing to sagging and wrinkling. Always use a sun protection product when out in the sun, and avoid the strongest rays. In lieu of a tanning bed, use a self-tanning cream or a bronzing powder for a warm glow.

* Be conscious of repeated facial expressions. Squinting, smiling and other repeated gestures with the face can cause lines to form under the skin. For those who find themselves squinting, they can try sunglasses or have their vision checked. Smiling cannot be avoided; however, one can stretch the muscles of the face to improve in strength and flexibility.

* Eat and drink healthily.The skin is the largest organ of the body. Just like the heart and lungs, it needs healthy foods to stay in top form. Be sure to include a balanced diet and plenty of hydrating beverages in the plan for healthy skin. Avoid over-indulgence in caffeine, sodium and alcohol, all of which can dehydrate and possibly compound skin dryness.

* Exercise. Exercise gets the heart pumping and brings oxygen to all necessary systems of the body. Again, with skin being the largest organ, exercise can help promote a healthy appearance and ward off premature wrinkling.

* Use care when washing. Tugging and rubbing of the skin can damage connective fibers, leading to wrinkles. Massage the face gently when washing and avoid harsh exfoliating products that can scratch and damage the skin.Trying these methods can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles. However, if wrinkles become a nuisance, a consultation with a dermatologist to discuss options may be necessary.

Trying these methods can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles. It's been a similar situation night after night. Don't worry, you're not alone.
Every year millions of people report having frequent sleep disturbances, say statistics. Women are generally more apt to having a sleeping problem than men or children. In a search for relief, some people try over-the-counter sleep remedies while others suffer night after night. Others still seek help from their family doctor by the way of prescription medication. All of these remedies have their risks.

Doctors generally agree that sleeping pills are a short-term solution to a sleeping problem. In fact, some drugs may have side effects that are troublesome or mask underlying symptoms of insomnia, such as apnea. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked manufacturers of sedative-hypnotic sleeping pills to warn consumers and health professionals about potential risks like sleep-driving, anaphylaxis, cooking and eating food, and making phone calls while asleep --all situations that have been documented in recent years. Drugs, even over-the-counter ones, may have a certain measure of dependence or addictiveness.

As a result, many women have begun seeking alternative, drug-free solutions to their sleeping problems. They could find that making a few lifestyle changes, such as limiting noise in the bedroom, is all that's needed to get some rest. Loud noises, be it from barking dogs, morning garbage trucks or the ever-present snoring of spouses, are often at the root of female insomnia.

Sleep Pretty in Pink(R) Ear Plugs, for example, have grown in popularity thanks in large part to word of mouth, and doctor recommendation. These ear plugs are tailor made for women's smaller ear canals and reduce noise by 32 decibels.

"I recommend the Sleep Pretty in Pink ear plugs to all of my female patients," says Dr. Marc Darrow. "These cute little pink ear plugs are a drug-free solution that helps women fall asleep fast and stay asleep longer."

Other natural and healthy ways to combat insomnia include:

* Regular daily exercise: As little as 30 minutes of exercise per day can make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. While daily exercise can be effective, don't exercise too late at night, as such a schedule will raise your body temperature, perhaps adding to your existing difficulties with insomnia.

* Eliminate nap time: Busy professionals often find a short nap can help them make it through the day. However, such naps can prove too energizing, making it more difficult to fall asleep at bedtime.

* Block out light: Light that shines into the room by a street lamp or even cars in the neighborhood could be disruptive to sleep. Install darkening curtains to limit light in the evening and early morning.

Sleep Pretty in Pink Ear Plugs are available at grocery, drug and superstore locations nationwide. Aliza Lifshitz, Internist, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles

Perhaps no issue has made more headlines this year than the flu. At the core of those headlines is the 2009 H1N1 virus, otherwise known as swine flu virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hundreds of deaths have already been associated with the 2009 H1N1 virus, and the coming months figure to prove even more deadly as flu season approaches.

What's most troubling about the coming flu season, particularly for the nation's large Hispanic population, are the warnings that the season could prove to be the worst yet. According to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, the coming flu season could pose a serious health threat. For Hispanics, that's especially concerning, as a recent Associated Press report noted Hispanics are four times more likely to be hospitalized as a result of the 2009 H1N1 virus. Despite that, a September 2009 poll conducted by Garcia Research indicates that 56 percent of Hispanic adults said they were "not concerned" about the flu. In addition, fewer than 4 in 10 indicated that they were "very likely" to get vaccinated for the seasonal flu.

Why Get a Flu Shot?

The flu is highly contagious, easily spreading from person to person, and can be especially harmful to children. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the "single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year." The flu vaccine can prevent influenza among 70 to 90 percent of healthy adults by protecting against common types of flu viruses that are in circulation.

Who Needs a Flu Shot?

In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can and should get vaccinated. The CDC recommends that all children ages 6 months to 18 years be vaccinated. In addition, household caregivers -- including moms, dads, grandparents, nannies, and other child care providers -- should get vaccinated.

When Should You Get Vaccinated?

Yearly flu vaccination should begin in September or October before flu season peaks, but the flu shot can protect you even if you get vaccinated late in the flu season into December, January and beyond. While flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, flu activity typically peaks in January or later.

How Can Exposure

to the Flu Be Reduced?

In addition to getting vaccinated, there are myriad ways individuals can help prevent exposure to the flu virus.

* Sing and Scrub. Make sure kids wash their hands often. They should wash frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice).

* Cough and sneeze into elbows, not hands. If they don't have a tissue, teach kids to cough and sneeze into the inside of their elbows. Coughing into hands is more likely to spread bacteria and viruses through touch.

* Disinfect Hot Spots. Kids and adults alike can touch many surfaces in a short period of time. To reduce risk of spreading the flu virus, disinfect hard surfaces as directed using an EPA registered product that is effective against the influenza A virus, such as Clorox(R) Clean-Up(R) Cleaner with Bleach and Clorox(R) Disinfecting Wipes, on commonly touched surfaces. Plastic children's toys, doorknobs, phones, computer keyboards, remote controls, and faucets can all be sources of the influenza virus, and an individual can still get infected 2-8 hours after the virus was initially deposited on the surface. So be sure to make disinfecting such areas a part of your daily household routine.

* Continue living a healthy lifestyle. Eating right, exercising and getting plenty of sleep help boost the body's ability to fight the effects of the flu viruses.
                            For more information about helping to protect yourself and your family during flu season, visit www.VidaySalud.com, www.cdc.gov/flu, www.clorox.com, www.Cloroxenespanol.com, or www.cdc.gov/flu/espanol.

technorati tags: vaccination disinfectants flu season h1n1 swine flu seasonal flu

Clearing Up Acne Misconceptions

Acne is a prevalent skin disorder that affects millions of people, primarily in the teenage years and early 20s. In the United States alone, 60 million people are reported to have acne. However, only 11 percent seek treatment for the condition. Acne affects all races, ages and both genders.
Understanding Acne

Acne isn't the localized pimple that occurs once in a while. Acne is typically a series of blemishes that spring up over and over. Here is the general life cycle of acne:

1. The body produces more sebum (oil) than is necessary in sebaceous glands. Puberty and other hormonal changes are generally triggers for excessive sebum production.

2. The sebum, which in a normal pore would drain to the surface and go away naturally, mixes with bacteria from the skin and forms a blockage in the pore known as a microcomedone.

3. This microcomedone forms into a true comedone, which is commonly referred to as a "whitehead" or a "blackhead." When the trapped sebum and bacteria remain below the skin, it is a whitehead. When the blemish opens to the surface of the skin and oxidizes, it forms a blackhead. Blackheads are not pores with dirt in them. They're actually the sebum, bacteria and oxidized melanin, which turns a dark brown or black color. A blackhead or whitehead can release its contents to the surface and heal. This is why this type of acne is considered non-inflammatory.

4. Another route for the microcomedone to take is inflammatory acne. In this case a papule will form when there is a break in the follicular wall of the pore. White blood cells rush in and the pore becomes inflamed. The papule will develop into a pustule several days later when white blood cells make their way to the surface of the skin. This is what people usually refer to as a "zit" or a "pimple."

Inflamed pores can rupture and spread to other areas of the skin. Sometimes several pores are affected at the same time and may form a nodule or a cyst under the skin.

Acne can be painful to the touch and also very visible on the skin. Lesions may occur anywhere on the body, but are generally most visible on the face, back or chest.

Acne Treatment

Many people think that individuals with acne do not wash properly or eat greasy foods that can cause acne to surface. These are misconceptions about the skin disorder. As mentioned, acne forms from an overabundance of sebum mixed with naturally occurring bacteria. It is not the result of a dirty face or indulging in fast food French fries.

Treatment for acne depends upon the scope of the condition. Options consist of reducing sebum production, removing dead skin cells, and killing bacteria with topical drugs and oral medications.

* Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most popular and longest-used treatments for acne. It is found in many of the over-the-counter cleansing pads and in popular "as seen on TV" acne treatments. Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes, are the bacteria responsible for acnes. The bacteria cannot live in an oxygen-rich environment. Benzoyl peroxide works by introducing oxygen into the pore, thereby killing P. acnes. Benzoyl peroxide is also good at cleaning out skin pores of excess dead skin, which in turn helps prevent pore blockages. Common side effects of this treatment are flaking and drying of the skin, which can be mediated by a little moisturizer. It's recommended to start with a benzoyl peroxide concentration of 2.5 percent to acclimate the skin.

* Sulfur and Resorcinol are other substances that are good at drying up oil and sloughing off dead skin cells, which may end up clogging pores.

* Salicylic acid is a mild acid that works as a keratolytic agent -- it encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells. It is found in a host of skin treatment products because of its ability to dissolve the outer layer of skin.

* Alcohol will dry out the skin and excessive oil. It is typically found in toners and other face washes.

* For severe acne cases, a dermatologist may prescribe medications that work to treat acne from the inside out. A combination of oral antibiotics (to kill the P. acnes bacteria), and vitamin A derivatives (to shrink oil-producing sebaceous glands) may be used depending upon severity.

There are many viable treatments for acne. With routine care lesions can be kept at bay and under control. Over time an individual may find he or she "grows out" of acne. If you are concerned about acne, visit your doctor to find a treatment method that is best for the severity of your condition.

CAPTION: Acne can be controlled with different treatment options.

technorati tags: acne sebum sebaceous glands blackhead whitehead acne treatment

'Heel' and Pamper Your Feet

(MS) -- Millions of dollars are spent every year by women and men who want to pamper their feet. While the pedicure has evolved into a spa treatment in recent years, it really has its roots as a medical procedure designed to care for ailing feet.

Although a pedicure is a popular beauty treatment, there are still many who are reticent to put their feet in someone else's hands. Concern about sanitary procedures at a spa or embarrassment about the condition of their feet leads many individuals to seek out home treatment options that are convenient, effective and affordable. So at-home spa treatments have become popular.

Cracked, dry heels is one condition that can cause embarrassment and even pain. In many cases, this common problem is caused by dry skin, the presence of calluses and prolonged pressure on the heel, particularly for people with a job that requires a lot of standing. People with severely dry heels have been known to wear through pantyhose or socks, and may experience cracking so advanced that heels ache or bleed.

It may not be necessary to visit a spa or podiatrist to treat cracked heels. The Heeltastic(TM) soothing balm, in a convenient application stick, is the newest product for your at-home foot therapy routine. It is formulated for chronically dry and cracked skin. The balm penetrates deep into the heel with Neem and Karanja oils imported from India, as well as skin moisturizers and nutrients that promote healthy skin. Gentle enough to use several times a day, feet feel smoother and softer after just days of use. To learn more, visit www.heeltastic.com.

Those who want to take additional steps to promote foot health and an attractive appearance should consider these additional foot care tips:

* If you do have pedicures at a salon, it is a wise investment to purchase your own tools so you are ensured they are sanitized and safe.

* Wash and soak your feet daily for cleanliness and be careful to rinse off all soap, especially between toes.

* When clipping toenails, do so straight across, to prevent the formation of ingrown toenails. Do so after a bath or shower so that the nails will be soft and easier to cut.

* Wear shoes and socks that fit correctly. Otherwise you risk corns and calluses, which can be painful and unsightly. Limit the use of high heels, which put unnatural pressure on the balls of the feet.

* If you frequent a gym, locker room or public pool, do not walk around barefoot -- use a pair of sandals or flip-flops. This protects your feet from bacteria or fungus that may be present on the floor.

* Regularly slough off dead skin that forms on the feet with a pumice stone, or something more convenient like the PedEgg(TM).

*Walk around the home in bare feet frequently. It stretches out the tendons and ligaments of the foot and promotes circulation.

* If you work on your feet or spend long hours standing, take frequent breaks and elevate the feet to prevent cracked heels or other foot pain.

* Enlist the help of a partner for a good foot massage every once in a while.
